Currently, we are using Everyday Math put out by University of Chicago. This math program works to develop the way student think about math and numbers. It requires them to be flexible problem solvers and uses various algorithms, so that they are solving problems in many different ways. Much of the rote practice of basic math facts are done through playing math games. Students are encourage to play the games often at home and on line.
Please make sure that your child comes to school with their math tools and toolkit. They should always have their cards, some coins for counters, their math triangles to practice math facts, scissors, a ruler, compass, geo-template, and their calculator (please see Jane for the supply list request). Students are expected to come prepared with their materials and ready to learn.
Generally we will complete one lesson a day. Student homework follows the lesson which is also called the study-link. Each student has their own Study Link book which they can keep in their backpack. Students tear out the pages as we go and complete the worksheets.
Family Letters are sent home at the beginning of each unit. Keep those handy as they also contain the answer key to the homework for that unit. Students and parents should use the key to check the work the night before turning in the homework the next morning.
There are “do anytime activity” and recommended math games to play so that students can reinforce the concepts and skills we are working on for that unit. Students should also visit everydaymathonline.com to practice math skills by playing games or using the online SRB (Student Reference Book). There are free family resources on the site if you need more help with some of the algorithms. Also, if you need another copy of the Family Letter, you can download one from the Family Resources button on Everyday Math Online.
Note: If you are having a difficult time playing some of the games in Everyday Math Online. The problem may be in that the pop-up windows are blocked. Try unblocking the pop ups and you should be able to access the rest of the games. The other thing you can try is updating adobe shockwave player. Click here to run test to see if shockwave is installed.
