“When seen from outer space, our beautiful blue planet has no national boundaries.”
––Dalai Lama
The earth, with less than three-tenths of it covered by land, is sometimes called “the water planet”. 71% of our home planet is covered by ocean. It’s no wonder that this is where life originated. From the evolution of our planet, of life, of cultures–the oceans connect us all.
In this department we will dive into the study of marine science. We will explore how the ocean’s currents and tides flow, the different zones, and examine a few marine inhabitants and how they have evolved and adapted to their water environment.
We will also explore the human impact and our global responsibility in maintaining the health of our “water planet” – in particular, the “Pacific garbage patch”.
“For those who have seen the Earth from space, and for the hundreds and perhaps thousands more who will, the experience most certainly changes your perspective. The things that we share in our world are far more valuable than those which divide us.”
––Donald Williams, US Astronaut
